Food waste, fish droppings and other organic matter containing nitrogen are broken down by bacteria in the nitrogen cycle into ammonium, and then into toxic nitrites. These are then transformed by other beneficial bacteria into harmless nitrates in low concentrations. In a well-functioning pond or aquarium, nitrite levels should be below 0.3 mg/l. During the start-up phase of an aquarium or pond, when nitrifying bacteria are not yet sufficiently developed, regular checks are essential to prevent poisoning. Keep out of reach of children.
